Hi,
I have a film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around a cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (cartoonist in the East Bay Express, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story.

Go to www.compoundeyemovie.com for info and a trailer.

The screenings are:
Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5:30pm at the CineArts@Sequoia theater in Mill Valley
Sat. Oct. 13 at 2:45pm at the Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.

Tickets can be purchased at www.mvff.com (search "Compound Eye")

I am so pleased to announce my triumphant return to…dang, that sounded a bit blech! Let me start over.

Good friends:

You’ll be happy to hear…like I’m expecting you all to slap me on the back or something. Ok, I’ll get it right this time.

Party People:

We’re going to have a funky good time at KFJC 89.7fm (http://kfjc.org), this Thursday, May 3rd from midnight to midnight, with the long anticipated 24 hour “Doing It To Death, A James Brown Birthday Special”, featuring live & rare recordings, interviews, dance contests, fashion show, testimonials and tributes. Hosted by Myself, Spliff Skankin, Hawkeye Joe, KJ Dweller, Mr. Lucky & more.

I’ll be on from 8pm to midnight, bringing the show to its absolute climax with some rare JB’s James Brown instrumentals, and some serious live James Brown you have not heard anywhere!

I hosted several radio shows at KFJC between 1988 and 1997 under the air name Reverend Dah Wave, including a mid-day Jazz/Soul/Funk show, where every day from noon to noon-thirty it was “The Brown Bag Lunch”, 30 minutes of Mr. Please, Please, Please itself. I haven’t done a show there since 1999. It’s the best station in the West, and other than the great WFMU, the tops in all the land.

If you’re close to Foothill JC, in the SF Bay Area, tune in to 89.7FM, if you’re outside the area, please do yourself the favor and tune in any time during the show. Remember: midnight to midnight. You have no excuses.

Now, go on out and do you thang!

Hey Folks!!

Finally after three years of waiting SFLR will have it's day in the
Ninth Circuit. This is where we could actually make some change!
Everyone who can should come on down to see the deftness of our
fantastic legal team! We will have stickers available to show your
support.

SFLR vs. FCC: Head to head, oral arguments!
February 14, 2007, 9:30 AM, Booth Auditorium at UC Berkeley School of
Law (Boalt Hall, located on Bancroft Way at College Ave. /
http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/DE67.html )

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral argument from lawyers
representing long time media activist San Francisco Liberation Radio.

SFLR was raided in October, 2003 when federal marshals, SFPD and FCC
agents stormed into the home where the station was located, with guns
drawn, and seized SFLR’s broadcasting equipment in order to prevent
SFLR from broadcasting. SFLR will argue (through its counsel, Mark
Vermeulen, and other pro bono lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild)
that the federal government violated the station’s and its
listeners’
First Amendment rights when it obtained the warrant for the raid and
the seizure of the equipment through a back-door, ex parte procedure.
In civil seizure cases (as opposed to criminal cases), fair notice and
a hearing before a judge typically must take place before any raid can
go forward. This is especially true where First Amendment free speech
rights are involved. However, here, the US Government here utilized a
maritime law to conduct the raid without giving advance notice to the
station, arguing that a radio station is like a ship that may sail away
in the night.

The station, with a volunteer staff of nearly 60 people, was located in
a house firmly rooted upon land and posed no danger of trying to
“escape,” nor was it interfering with any other station’s
broadcasts.
It had been broadcasting at 100 watts in San Francisco for 11 years and
had been in consistent contact with the FCC regarding licensing
matters. The Court will decide whether the government has the right to
obtain from the District Court an ex parte order to raid a radio
station, and seize the equipment even where as in our case, our lawyer
had explicitly requested notice if such action was contemplated.

This hearing is the next step in three years of legal proceedings in
this case, and may well effect how the rights of others challenging FCC
regulations are observed (or not) in the future.

(You'd Think People Would Know By Now, But) Here We Go Again

We are getting too many reports of people buying $25 tickets to a so-called "Fab Mab Reunion" concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco thinking it is a Dead Kennedys reunion, therefore Biafra will be there.

Jello responds:

Enough people are confused [that] we need to set the record straight. No, it is not a Dead Kennedys reunion. Yes, I am boycotting the whole scam. These are the same greed-mongers who ran to corporate lawyers and sued me for over six years in a dispute sparked by my not wanting "Holiday in Cambodia" sold into a Levi's commercial. They now pimp Dead Kennedys in the same spirit as Mike Love suing Brian Wilson over and over again, then turning around and playing shows as the Beach Boys. They despise everything our band ever stood for.

"Money Uber Alles" is what all these bands used to stand against. Back in Mabuhay days, no one was more up front about not selling out to Bill Graham than Dead Kennedys and Flipper, especially Will Shatter (RIP). Now Bill Graham Presents has been swallowed and the name is being used as a front for Clear Channel, as nasty a corporate predator as Fox News and Wal-Mart.

It breaks my heart that Dead Kennedys now seems to have the worst reputation of any old punk band trying to cash in on their names, even more than the so-called Misfits. We still get complaints from people who bought tickets to shows expecting Dead Kennedys and getting stuck with the world's greatest karaoke band. Others report someone they know getting ripped off thinking they were seeing me the whole time because no one on stage ever mentioned the singer's name. I guess it's sort of like paying to see Black Sabbath and finding out the singer is Donny Osmond.

So I hope people who go know in advance what they are getting into. As Johnny Rotten said at the Sex Pistols' own miserable Bill Graham experience, "Ever get the feeling you're being cheated?"

OK, so my current favorite dj is 45 rpm. Yes, he does sound like the comic book store guy from the Simpsons, but hey. His music is outragously fabulous punk noir. I had a friend over at my house Saturday who swore she had found the new love of her life.

I also always liked Mona Me with her Smiths fetish. Too bad she's in London now, but I believe her spirit lives on!

SEATTLE’S KULTUR SHOCK AND SAN FRANCISCO’S LA PLEBE MIX IT UP FOR A SPECTACULAR CLASH OF CULTURE AND SOUND!!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24
SF’S BOTTOM OF THE HILL

After turning heads and blowing minds during last month's two night stint at Slim’s with Gogol Bordello, this show marks Kultur Shock triumphant return to San Francisco to play their particular brand of aggressive Balkan music at The Bottom of the Hill. Consisting of members from Bosnia, Bulgaria and Japan(!), they have been described by UK Metal Hammer Magazine as “the very model of a m!ulti-cultural punk rock band, just your everyday American-Japanese Spanglish Balkan Mariachi punk rock band.” The fact is, they’re all that, but louder.

Kultur Shock was formed in 1998 by Gino Yevdjevich, a Sarajevo refugee who emigrated to Seattle one year earlier. They released their first album "Live in Amerika" in 1999, and via SF's Jello Biafra, was introduced to Faith No More's Billy Gould, who then produced their two subsequent albums "FUCC the INS" (2001) and "Kultura Diktatura" (2004) and released them on his SF based indie label Koolarrow Records. This is their last scheduled appearance before the release of their upcoming album "We Have Come To Take Your Jobs Away", due for release September 2006.

Co-headlining this event will be local favorites "La Plebe", the Mission District's hardest working, beer guzzling "barrio street punk with horns outfit". With three cds under their belt (“Conquista 21”, “Exploited People”, and “Entre Cerveza, Ritmo y Emocion”) they have made a name for themselves as a pure-hearted punk band who’s well known for their legendary shows, relentless West Coast touring (including full 3 tours of Mexico) , and invaluable contribution to the local music community. This will be their last SF show before they embark on their 2006 "Sin Fronteras" Tour (trans: "Without Borders") of the Balkans (Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and points in between). In fact, May 24 marks the kickoff for the tour, which officially begins the following morning.

Opening the show will be Fuga, formed in 2000 in El Paso, Texas and have since relocated to the SF Bay Area. Thier dedication to social and political issues permeates throughout their lyrics expressing a sense of hope.creating passionate uplifting music for the growing bilingual population.

.
SO LET SEE WHAT ON RESONANCE FM

1: 9.42pm Friday Sept 19th - Voivod followed by Upsilon Acrux and then Gentle Giant and some nice early IQ and before that the show kicked off with Ex Girl. It’s the final once a month Friday Other Rock Show with Marina O. Marina has been broadcasting in this slot for three years now. Time for a slight change and a move to weekly. “The Other Rock Show is the musical exploration of the avant, of perverse and complex rock, progressive adventures beyond the safety of 4/4”.

What else is there on Resonance FM? SOME RANDOM SWITCHES OF THE RESONANCE ON-SWITCH

2: 4.25pm Sunday - The start of our Resonance Watch - ok, let’s randomly turn on and listen: Some kind of strange Germanic sounding oompha band with a flute, no, Eastern European? Threatening to turn into a Polish polka - oh, it’s the “world’s favourite Jewish music show” called Something Jewish (I wasn’t that far off!) an easy going left field slightly tongue in cheek magazine show with a Jewish perspective…

3: 10.40pm Sunday - Just switched on to hear strange mellow industrial drones and talking crowd noises - oh it’s a live performance, the talking/drone was the crowd, they seem to be having a prize draw, to win who knows what? Hang on, it’s Stokey Churchy - kite flying and lit-art rapping from deepest Stoke Newington and someone called Skanky and someone else called Doctor Fingerpaint and don’t ask me what’s going on now, just get to your radio and find out…….

4: 10.10am - Monday morning and I can’t work out if this is some kind of pagan ritual or maybe a native north American thing that I’ve just tuned into. Now there’s a cat purring and the gentle hum of traffic and a whispered spoken word thing from an intriguingly soft-spoken American girl. She’s talking about the wind and car engines and the sun like a beacon and all day is mid day, she’s really whispering now…. Arctic Sun/Arctic wind by Audrey somebody or other (sorry, didn’t catch the name, rude of me). Now it’s music from Linda O’Keith and a track called Tuning In Section One - which seems to be all to do with the act of tuning in your radio!

5: 11.28am Monday Morning still. Right now it’s the KLF and the Red Army choir and they just had an interview with Bill Drummond and Mark Manning (Zodiac Mindwarp) about their new book, and now they’re talking about a photography journalist exhibition - seems to be some kind of rather good informative arts review show

6: 1.38pm Wednesday - interviewing people in a super market in Scotland about Fair Trade goods and why and who and how it touches people’s lives…. Talking about a boy being deported to back Angola from the UK at the age of 15 and his terrified father committing suicide instead (read more at indymediauk.org - Indymedia is always worth checking out but that’s another thing for another day)

7: 6.12pm Saturday - Lots of cool 60’s sounding French crooner/film soundtrack stuff, all lush strings and big arrangements and it’s Johnny Trunk with a show called OST - Original film soundtracks, a two hour show every Saturday.

8: 7.17pm Saturday - The Truth About Markets with Max Keiser And Stacy Herbert. Financial markets and economic analysis and conspiracy theories - theories about the head of an airline who always take the train…..why Tesco’s are so bad and how you’re making yourself poorer by buying their cheap food and how those loyalty bonus cards are just modern day slave chains and he knows, he’s been involved in Wall Street (so he keeps telling us) and he warns of the evils of the politeness of neo-liberalism and how America kills any journalist who tries to find out about the truth in Iraq, and who’s really behind the terrorism and is it Kate Moss and Tesco’s?

9: 11.19pm Saturday - some really good banging hardcore techno - “exclusive live set coming up from Monkey State, first here comes some nice warm dub….” Followed by some erratic D n’b from Shitmat “and next up a nice bit of gabber from DJ Skinhead called Extreme Terror” - 1, 2, 3, 4 bang bang bang wooooooooooaaaaggghhhhh, bang bang bang….next week it’s a special show with DJ Wrongspeed… and now at midnight a change of Show and some Psychic TV followed by a documentary about the CIA and their operations against Cuba and they infiltrated via the Olympic organisation and this appears to be a programme originally broadcast on altenativeradio.org - and now I have to go investigate them….

10: 1.00am Sunday - Interview with Gina Birch from the Raincoats and a feature on women in punk/post-punk and attitudes that the Raincoats encountered and the effect of Riot Grrrl and the influence of those Poison Girls (a fine thing to be listening to as we put this issue of Organ together…..). Now Gina is playing live in the cramped Resonance studio - a little studio above a restaurant in Denmark Street.

There’s all kinds of good things on Resonance, it’s always worth turning on, sometimes you can get yourself hooked for hours and hours, and yes, occasionally they can catch you off guard and you think “what the hell is this pretentious crap?”. What the hell, one man’s meat etc... Our ResonanceFM Watch experiment proves the sheer brilliance is in the majority. Haven’t mentioned Calling All Pensioners - a suprisingly aggressive pensioners action show that you just have to check out, the Kosmische show is always good, Xanurtsian Nights from Max Benezeth is always good. Max presents a rather seductive stylish Anglo-French electronica show in his very own very warm way. Not in London? The web site has archives and most importantly good quality live streaming. If you’re on the outskirts of the city, give the airwaves a try - The Other Rock Show has listeners in Staines and Kent! Let’s not forget that ResonanceFM is a legal, licenced station supported by listener donations and benefit gigs and all but two of the many DJs, administrators and engineers are unpaid volunteers! Resonance 104.4fm - the art of listening. Experimental radio art 24/7… www.resonancefm.com
