642-5259

Ok. I've been listening to KALX since about 1980. Yeah, I'm friggin old. However, it's the only station on the dial for me, in my home.
My kid, the other night, was working on college application (I told you I was old) and asked me what her social security number was. I said, Hmm... lemme see here. She said, I know! It's 642-5259! I cracked up, and then she told me that was the first phone number she ever memorized. She said when she was little, she figured if she ever got kidnapped, at least she knew she could call KALX and tell the DJ to tell us to come get her.
How's that for radio station devotedness?
KALX rocks.

that is sweet. I 'discovered' KALX when I moved to Oakland from the City 4 years ago. Suddenly I could get this station! It rocked my tiny kitchen where my new (and current) man and I danced often. It gave me a sense of pride about being in the East Bay. Turned a feeling of "I don't belong/I can't afford' to "yeah, I'd rather be here anyway!" It was the backdrop to exploring my new hood on foot and finally getting more familiar with what the 'other side' has to offer.
Oddly I haven't listened as much the last few months. Not home by myself as often with the radio on.... time to get back to it. I remember really liking Disco Shawn, Kitty, and P-fish...Meaty Paws and oh yeah I really like Majority Whip!

Huh Meaty Paws?! I always thought of it as "Meaty Pause" like in "the Pause that refreshes". Mmm meat.

Yeah, I guess I'm old too. When in H.S. I voluterred at KALX in Public Affairs (83-84). Had a live show and still have my reel to reels. Studio was on Bowditch then...punk days...I remember The Clash coming in...Elvis Costello...at 16-17 I had a press pass and could get into any show...brilliant! I still love the diversity and listen often.
